  8.    This is a quick and dirty way to get a nice compact printout of your
  9. hard drive directory.  Good to use just before a back up or just to keep
  10. a record.  It uses the smallest printing mode of both the HP Deskjet (and
  11. I assume the HP LaserJet) and also superscript mode of an Epson compat.
  12. This baby will fit a list of about 10 meg worth of files (8 meg with an
  13. Epson) onto ONE PAGE for easy cross referencing and quick referencing. Works
  14. VERY fast too. If you have an HP, you can save some ink by selecting DRAFT
  15. on the front panel switches.  The program does not change that setting.

  17.    Just choose your printer from the buttons and choose your drives. The
  18. rest is history.  By the way, if you wish it to run with your printer
  19. pre-selected, just SHIFT-CLICK the printer button of your choice and it
  20. will give you the opportunity to save that configuration.

  22.    This is not only for hard drives really.  Just select the SUPRESS FORM
  23. FEED BUTTON and the buttons for both DRIVE A and DRIVE B then place a disk
  24. into each drive and smack the RETURN key.  Once those drives have been
  25. dumped, slide in two more disks and smack the RETURN key again.  Repeat the
  26. process until you have the compact catalog you need.

  33.     The current release of Compact Dir (version CD3) will print a
  34. verbose listing including bytes used and free for drives/partitions and
  35. also bytes used and number of items for subdirectories.  Along with that,
  36. CD3 has the ability to sort on all of the standard fields (NONE NAME DATE
  37. SIZE TYPE).  It will also mask out any files that do not match an optional
  38. extender list into which you can enter up to ten extenders.  To assist you
  39. in locating the IMAGE files you would like to print with any of the CAT
  40. programs, just enter a list of extenders such as:

  42. PI? PC? TN? IMG MAC NEO
  43.  
  44. and all your Degas, Tiny, IMG, MAC and NEO pics will be listed ONLY. To 
  45. get a quick readout of your drives and their present USED/FREE space,
  46. enter an extender such as "3XY" or "SEX" or some such extender that you
  47. know no files on the drives will have.  All the files will be skipped
  48. and only the drive info will get printed.

  50. For this release, CD3 has been fixed so that there will no longer be a
  51. need to set any DIP switches on the HP DeskJet.  The earlier problem with
  52. this was due to differences in the ROMs of the early DJ's as compared to
  53. the later models.

  55. ***********  UPDATE NOTICE 7/27/90  CDAR VERSION
  56. CD3 has been made compatible with the CDAR 504 and MetaDOS (though it
  57. will still only access drives A thorugh P).  There is a slight drawback
  58. which may be considered a feature by many of you.  CD's have an awsome
  59. amount of data on them and that taxed the original CD3.PRG's limits
  60. (especially for 1 meg machines).  This one will read up to a maximum
  61. of 3000 items (that includes folders and files) at a time, then it MUST
  62. print them before it reads any more. However, you can make this a feature
  63. by changing that parameter if you like down to 1000 or less items per pass. 
  64. You can use the pause for each pass to flop over the paper and print on
  65. the backside if you like (for those ecology minded individuals, this
  66. is a real selling point <hee hee>).  Just click continue.  To set the
  67. pass limits and the pause, click on the very bottom box of the dialog
  68. then answer the questions truthfully.  BTW -  CD's are always full.
  69.  
  70. NOTE:  If you have drives for all formats available with MetaDOS then
  71. you MUST NOT (I repeat __ MUST NOT __) choose to print C THROUGH P.  If
  72. MetaDOS attempts to read a drive (eg format) that does not match that of
  73. the disc in the drive then boom city (crash).  No bones, that's the way
  74. it is.  Use CHOOSE instead and just dump your current CD (drive). If
  75. you are unclear about this, then you must not have read the manual that
  76. came with the CDAR and MetaDOS.  I know, I didn't get one or the other
  77. and found this out the hard way.  Anyway, just make sure that you do
  78. CHOOSE a drive that is format compatible with the disc in the CDAR. If
  79. there's a High Sierra format disc in there and your drive J is set for
  80. ISO9660 and you try to print drive J instead of drive K which you have
  81. set for High Sierra, then reboot. Sometimes it will recover and if it
  82. does, then you must pop the CDAR door open then close it again to make
  83. MetaDOS recognize the disk. I have found that MS_DOS <cough> disks from
  84. the big blue world can be ISO or often High Sierra (but you gotta try
  85. them first to find out (the hard way).

  87. Ummmm, just a final note.  The GEM (Meta) DOS functions fsfirst and
  88. fsnext work EXTREMELY slowly on a CD because of the immense data
  89. on these discs.  You'll have to wait it out.  Try this program on your
  90. harddrive if you think it's CD3_CDAR that's holding things up. It ain't.

  101. At present, the guys (Carl Bacani especially) at COMPUTER ROCK seem to
  102. be the only ones really pushing development on the CDAR 504 right now.
  103. They deserve your support.  They offer an incredible ST SoftWare PD and
  104. ShareWare library of 150 megs on one disc! They also have a CD full of
  105. excellent clip art with which is bundled a special version of IMAGE CAT
  106. designed just for the CDAR 504  (eg, IMAGE CAT is free with the disk!)
  107. Call them and ask about it.  Then call or write Atari Corp and tell them
  108. to get this thing to market so we can all buy one.  By the way, the
  109. Atari CDAR 504 plays Led Zeplin damned good too! In fact, I'm listening
  110. to it right now with the headphones as I type!  And, if I want to access
  111. the clip art disc and whatnot, all I gotta do is pop ol' Jimmy Page out
  112. and pop the ST Clip art collection in! Viola!

  117. These ShareWare programs are placed on disk and/or uploaded on GEnie
  118. and BIX as a service to you.  I have not yet received a single donation
  119. for either IMG INDEX or CD3 that were included on the release disk of
  120. IMAGE CAT and there have been over 1000 copies of IMAGE CAT sold!  That
  121. does not speak well of ST ShareWare.  I have, however, gotten a few (darn
  122. few) donations otherwise and I thank those who have taken the time to be
  123. kind and generous individuals.  Thanks to those.
